The European Region of Gastronomy Kuopio 2020-21 programme is centred on gastronomy and food and it comprises events and activities that will tickle the taste buds of tourists. The programme starts with events in summer 2020 and runs until end of September 2021. The European Region of Gastronomy programme is based on existing events and festivals, complemented by activities suitable for both individual travellers and groups.

The overriding theme of the year's programme is foraging: picking berries and mushrooms, hunting and fishing. The programme's themed weeks include berry and mushroom picking trips, picnics, tastings, cooking courses, workshops, pop-up restaurants in surprising places, farm visits, culinary tour packages, food-themed exhibitions, food theatre/show & dinners, a variety of interesting experiences, art and culture, training events and food festivals.

Suitable products and services for groups are being developed throughout the project period with the aim of keeping services available afterwards as well.

Tasty Travels for Groups in North Savo Region 2020-21

Come and learn about the merchant Gustav Ranin and his magnificent family manor at Hiltulanlahti in Kuopio. The history of the estate dates back to 1792 when the Björbackestate was founded by the Swedish Crown as part of a general parcelling out of land. Ranin bought the estate at a compulsory auction in 1869. After learning about the history, you can enjoy a delicious summer lunch in the fine setting of the manor.

On the excursion "From the Peasantry to the Gentry's Manor House", you can see how the locals lived over a century ago –how they managed on their own in the countryside and what delicacies were served up at the manor. On the bus trip, you'll hear about Kuopio, Koivumäki Manor and the Riuttala Farmhouse Museum in Karttula, their history and their present. You are free to look around for yourself and learn about Finnish culture and the way of life more than a hundred years ago. The local guide is with the group throughout the day.

On the "Tasting Kuopio" sightseeing tour, you can enjoy local tastes at restaurants outside the city centre, such as the revolving Puijo Tower Restaurant and Saana on the shore of Lake Kallavesi. You can follow the footsteps of the legendary merchant Gustav Raninon a tour of the Lignell & Piispanen distillery and hear more of his story at the historic Koivumäki Manor. On the Local Food and Drink Culture cooking course, everyone can prepare something on a given menu. You will learn how to make drinks from the high-quality products of the Lignell & Piispanen distillery and winery and get a glimpse of the secrets of the manor's kitchen.

The group will be divided in two, one making aperitifs for the group under guidance, the other preparing the hors d'œuvres. The main course is prepared by the manor's chefs. One of the groups will take part in preparing the dessert, while the others make drinks to go with it.

Come and learn about the world of wild herbs in the rural Hiltulanlahti district of Kuopio.

Wilderness and nature guide, environmental companion and wild herb instructor, Piia Ratava will take you into the grounds of Koivumäki Manor to learn about familiar garden plants in a completely new way. She will explain how everyone can make use of garden plants, for both culinary and medicinal purposes. After the tour, you can enjoy supper together and continue the conversation. If something is found growing naturally that can be eaten straight away, it will end up on the plates.

In June the wild food festival SATOA Goes WILD takes place in Kuopio, turning the city centre into a large food festival area for the weekend. WILD combines eating together, taking exercise and enjoying culture. The leading role in the event is played by local wild ingredients, from which delicious portions are created by top local restaurants.SATOA Goes WILD is a "food walk"-type wild food adventure in Kuopio city centre, where your guide is the festival passport with its map. The festival route is formed by brick-and-mortar restaurants in the city centreand pop-up restaurants in the courtyards of historically valuable buildings. Besides food, SATOA Goes WILD has plenty of free side events along the route: dancing, music and art installations. You can participate in the event by buying a stampable festival passport, which also serves as an entrance ticket to the event. Yearly in August, Kuopio is being celebrated with the gastronomic treats of the SATOA Kuopio Food Festival. The August SATOA is a festival of local tastes, where you can buy and sample small portions of food for 3-6 euros in the spirit of street food culture and also enjoy the festival programme and performances. The international ANTI –Contemporary Art Festival is being held for the 19th time from 27 October - 1 November 2020 as part of the Kuopio Region of Gastronomy year, and the theme of the festival is food.

In the festival week, we will be presenting one of the world's most interesting culture awards, the ANTI Festival International Prize for Live Art. The festival is a unique, lively event encompassing old friends, appetising cheeses and good music. The centre piece of the festival is the magnificent twenty-metrecheese table, full of delicacies that can be enjoyed right up to midnight.

During the evening, visitors are entertained by artists performing both relaxed dining music and dance music as well as more lively up-tempo pieces to end the evening.

Altogether the cheese table features about ten different cheeses as well as plenty of suitable vegetables, fruit, jams and breads. Every year, new products are also featured. In addition to tasty cheeses, there are several carefully chosen red and white wines to complement the cheeses.

The Louhenkatu Street Carnival brings together the best shops in Iisalmi and the whole of Upper Savo on the streets of Iisalmi. Besides the various market stalls, the streets are occupied by street food stalls, each more tempting than the other.The day also provides a variety of entertainment, from fashion shows to musical performances. In the hustle and bustle there is a great atmosphere and business is brisk.The Louhenkatu Street Carnival has become one of Upper Savo's biggest, if not the biggest, free events.

The Strawberry Carnival has been held in Suonenjoki since 1970 and is one of Finland's longest-running summer events. The Carnival is held at a time when Finnish strawberries are at their sweetest.

In addition to the top Finnish musicians, you can experience, among other things, the bustle of the Strawberry Market and make some nice purchases, and enjoy the funfair, singing contests, Finnish Strawberry Eating Championship, a wide range of food and drinks and the pleasant carnival atmosphere. As usual, a Strawberry Girl will be chosen and crowned and the title of Strawberry Master will be awarded during the weekend.

The Kuopio Fish Market invites the whole family to a fish event in Kuopio's Harbour Square, where the leading role is played by Finnish fish and delicacies made from it. The Kuopio Fish Market is organised yearly in September and during the Fish Market weekend the market is open on Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 9am–5pm and Sun 10am–4pm.

The Kuopio Fish Market was first held in 1993 and has continued every autumn in the Harbour Square. The Market aims to promote consumption of Finnish fish and increase public knowledge on handling and using fish. The event has an established place in the province and is a showcase for Finnish fish and farm products.

A memorable Midsummer festival on 23 June (date 2021 tbc) in the heritage milieu of Muuruvesi with a tailored programme, festive food and drink, sauna and bonfire. Your guides are the master and mistress of the local ironworks and a sommelier.

  • The bus to the event leaves from Maljalahdenkatuin Kuopio at 3pm. During the bus journey, the mistress will tell the visitors about the festival and the region's history. The programme in Muuruvesi will start with a short musical performance by young people in the 110-year-old church, followed by a walk along Muuruvesi's Culture Trail and coffee at the Muru Cafe at the renovated Muuruvesi Harbour. At the cafe, you can see an exhibition by local artists, whose works are for sale. After the coffee break, you can do some Midsummer shopping at the Pienen Traktorin Puoti (Small Tractor Shop) and Topin Maatilamyymälä (Topi's Organic Farm Shop) as well as visit the Local History Museum or the cemetery accompanied by a guide.
  • Alternatively, after the coffee break (at 6pm) you can have your own programme (for an extra charge). The programmes last about 1½ hours.

You can see old tools with demonstrations, old vehicles and an exhibition of old domestic textiles. The Sturgeon & Champagne festival is held annually on the second weekend of August in Independence Park on the shore of the River Pirtinvirta in Varkaus.

Over the years, this summer festival has drawn thousands of people from the town and elsewhere to enjoy the August evening atmosphere with performances by top Finnish artists.

The event, celebrating Varkaus's signature fish, also offers first-class food and drink experiences. In the festival marquee, visitors enjoy a substantial dinner, caviar and excellent refreshments. Outside in the festival area, you can also enjoy sturgeon and champagne as well as high-quality local food.

The village of Tuovilanlahti is set in a singular environment –a long, narrow inlet with steep sides close to Korkeakoski Canyon. Osula Guest House is a unique meeting place, whose knowledgeable and friendly staff, in addition to dealing with accommodation and meals, act as agents for businesses providing holiday programmes.

The Bed and Breakfast Inn Osula’s rooms are individually furnished and they sleep from one to six persons each. The Inn serves also as a place for meetings and celebrations. On arrival, the participants will be given a short presentation on the Lassila Farm and the Ceramics Studio.

Participants on the course will learn the basics of raku firing and decorate raku articles themselves to take with them as mementos. There are half-finished simple pottery articles in the studio that will be decorated with a raku glaze and fired in an outdoor raku kiln. These will be lifted while red-hot into a smoking container, where the clay mass is stained black and the glazes acquire unexpected colours! The articles are cooled rapidly in water. The firing is repeated until all the articles are finished. The participants will receive their work to take with them at the end of the course.

The Riuttala Farm House Museum represents early 20th century farm and countryside living and work. The 14 hectare grounds includes over 20 peasant buildings, such as the main manor house, workshop, windmill and a particularly large grain drying barn. What makes the museum unique along with its size are the same items that were used by the inhabitants in the past. The themed days in summer introduce the visitors to traditional food, songs and heritage.

The Finnish Rye Cutting Championships takes place in August (2021 dates tbc). The event has been held at Riuttala for more than 30 years. The contest attracts competitors from around the region and helps to preserve the harvesting tradition and skills. It is always a point of honour for previous winners to come and defend their titles. The Championships are held in two categories –scythe and sickle. At the end of the day, the sides of the field are adorned with rye stooks, each one finer than the other. At Katrin Kammarj', you can try Riuttala's well-known rye porridge. Come and watch the competitors demonstrate their skills or enter yourself –either for the individual or team event!

Traditional Midsummer festival at Lohimaa in the village of Tervo, 25 - 26 June, 2021.

People gather in large numbers to celebrate Midsummer by the beautiful Äyskoski Rapids in the splendid setting of Lohimaa. Children especially fish enthusiastically for salmon, which are then prepared as desired by the customer and turned into a delicious meal by the trained staff at Lohimaa.
